Best wet food for kittens: our quick answer

Choose a complete food labelled for kittens, feed small amounts often, and keep fresh water available. Felix, Sheba and Whiskas all make kitten wet food in 85g pouches, so the best one is the recipe your kitten eats well and that matches the age on the pack.

Always follow the feeding guide on your exact pack, and ask your vet if your kitten is underweight, unwell or not eating.

How we put this guide together

We used Cats Protection and International Cat Care guidance and the manufacturers' UK kitten pages, plus Flux Trading's prices checked on 6 October 2026. We only compare things you can check yourself on the pack. We haven't taste-tested the foods, and recipes change.

What a kitten needs from wet food

  1. A food labelled for kittens. Cats Protection says once kittens are weaned at six to eight weeks old they need specific kitten food that is energy-dense. Adult food isn't designed for growing kittens.
  2. A complete food. Look for the word 'complete' on the pack. Felix describes its kitten food as a complete meal that doesn't need mixing with other food, and Sheba describes its kitten pouches as a 100% complete and balanced everyday meal.
  3. Small, frequent meals. Cats Protection says young kittens have smaller stomachs and should be fed smaller amounts more often, with food checked and replaced four times a day.
  4. Fresh water. Cats Protection advises always having a bowl of water available and replacing it at least once a day.
  5. No cow's milk. Cats Protection warns that many cats are lactose intolerant and cow's milk can upset their stomach.

How much and how often?

Use the guide printed on your pack, because it differs by recipe and kitten age. As an example, the Felix As Good As It Looks Kitten pouch guide on Purina's UK site suggests 3 to 3½ pouches a day for kittens aged 8–12 weeks, spread over 2–3 meals (or fed freely), rising to about 4 pouches a day at 26–52 weeks. Whiskas shows its guide on the pack. Your kitten's weight and health matter more than any chart, so ask your vet if you're unsure.

When should a kitten move to adult food?

The big brands label their kitten ranges up to about 12 months (Whiskas Kitten is 2–12 months). Move to adult food gradually, over a week or more, once your kitten reaches the age on the pack. International Cat Care advises changing food slowly by offering the new food next to the old and reducing the old gradually. Ask your vet if your kitten is a large breed or you're unsure of the timing.

Frequently asked questions

When can kittens start eating wet food?

Weaning usually starts at around three to four weeks. International Cat Care and Cats Protection both describe weaning beginning at this age. Start with wet kitten food, go slowly, and ask your vet if the kitten is orphaned or struggling.

How many times a day should a kitten eat?

Young kittens need small meals often. Cats Protection advises feeding smaller amounts more often and replacing food four times a day for young kittens. Your pack's guide will tell you how many pouches, and your vet can advise as your kitten grows.

Can kittens eat adult cat food?

It isn't recommended. Cats Protection says kittens need specific energy-dense kitten food once weaned. Use a food labelled for kittens until the age shown on the pack.

Is wet or dry food better for kittens?

Either can work if it is complete and labelled for kittens. International Cat Care suggests starting with wet kitten food, or soaked kitten kibble, when weaning. Choose the food your kitten eats well and discuss any worries with your vet.

Can kittens drink milk?

Avoid cow's milk. Many cats are lactose intolerant and milk can upset their stomach, so offer fresh water instead.

How long can I keep an opened kitten pouch?

Keep it in the fridge and use it within about two days at most. Whiskas says leftovers keep in the fridge for up to 2 days, Sheba says up to 48 hours, and Purina's general advice is to use opened wet food within 24–48 hours. Check your pack for the exact instruction.
