Best wet food for senior cats: our quick answer
Choose a complete food that matches your cat's age label, in a texture that's easy to eat, and talk to your vet first if your cat is losing weight or eating or drinking differently. Felix and Whiskas both make 7+ wet food, Whiskas also has an 11+ recipe with smaller, softer chunks, and Sheba says its standard recipes remain suitable for senior cats.

How we put this guide together
We used Cats Protection and International Cat Care guidance, the manufacturers' UK pages and Flux Trading's prices checked on 6 October 2026. We only compare things you can check on the pack. We haven't taste-tested the foods, and recipes change.
At what age is a cat a senior?
It depends who you ask. Pet food brands label 'senior' foods from 7+ (Felix and Whiskas) and Whiskas also has 11+. International Cat Care describes cats as 'mature' from 7 years, 'senior' between 11 and 14, and 'super senior' from 15. Cats Protection also treats cats as elderly or senior from 11, with 15 as super senior. Use the age on the pack as a starting point and your vet's advice for your own cat.
What matters most for an older cat
- See your vet about changes. Cats Protection says weight loss could be a sign of hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, diabetes or dental disease, and any significant change in appetite or thirst should be checked by a vet. Food won't fix a medical problem.
- Hydration. Cats Protection says wet food is around 70% water, and International Cat Care notes older cats are at greater risk of dehydration. Keep fresh water available, and consider several bowls.
- An easy texture. Cats Protection says cats with dental problems may prefer softer food in jelly or gravy to hard biscuits, and suggests adding a little water and mashing with a fork. International Cat Care notes sore gums can make eating painful.
- A complete food for the right age. Look for 'complete' on the pack and the age label, such as 7+ or 11+.
- Gradual changes. Cats Protection advises switching food gradually over a week or more to avoid an upset stomach.

How much should a senior cat eat?
Follow the guide on your exact pack. As an example, Purina's guide for Felix As Good As It Looks 7+ pouches suggests 3 pouches a day, in at least two meals, for an average 4kg senior cat. At about £0.30 per pouch on our current price, that would be roughly £0.90 a day if it was the only food. Weight, activity and health vary, so ask your vet if your cat is gaining or losing weight.

Frequently asked questions
Is wet food better for older cats?
It can help. Wet food is around 70% water according to Cats Protection, and many older cats find softer food easier to eat. A complete food your cat enjoys is what matters, so ask your vet if you're unsure.
What is the best wet food for a senior cat with sore teeth?
Soft jelly or gravy foods are often easier. Cats Protection suggests softer food in jelly or gravy, and International Cat Care notes sore gums can make eating painful. If your cat drops food or avoids eating, book a vet check rather than relying on food alone.
Does Sheba have a senior cat food?
Not as a separate range. Sheba says its recipes remain suitable for senior cats and that a tailored senior or veterinary diet may be considered if specific needs develop.
What is the difference between Whiskas 7+ and 11+?
The 11+ recipe has smaller, softer chunks. Whiskas also says it includes a prebiotic to support digestion. Check the exact pack, because recipes change.
My senior cat is losing weight. What should I do?
Contact your vet. Cats Protection says weight loss could point to conditions such as hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, diabetes or dental disease. Changing food alone won't solve those.
How should I switch my older cat's food?
Slowly, over a week or more. Mix a little new food in with the old, increase gradually, and stop and speak to your vet if your cat's eating or digestion changes.
How long can I keep opened wet food?
Up to about two days in the fridge. Whiskas says leftovers keep for up to 2 days, Sheba says up to 48 hours, and Purina's general advice is 24–48 hours in an airtight container. Follow the instructions on your exact pack, including for Felix.
